Double Spy Hop!

This week sightings have been absolutely amazing with the Whales literally ‘mugging’ guests on board Eye Spy for hours on end! ‘Mugging’ is where the focus of the whale’s attention is directed to the vessel rather than other nearby whales.

‘Spy hopping’ often occurs during a mugging situation where the whale rises and holds its position partially out of the water often exposing its entire head (similar to a human treading water.) Relying on their exceptional buoyancy control and positioning with their pectoral fins, spy hopping is controlled and slow, and can last for minutes at a time if the whale is inquisitive about whatever or in our case, ‘whomever’ they are viewing.
